Children, come to us as whole and complete beings.
The child enters the world as a new spirit bringing
us closer to wonder and mystery.
As adults our role can be to take in the child
as a piece of natural art - like wood or stone that
one could carve into any form. Instead of becoming
sculptors of human life we intentionally cooperate
with nature and essence. With patience and attentiveness
we discover the gem within the child.
To The Child:
O, uncarved block, nature's stone, - share with
me the wonder of your first times.
Let me witness your awe in the magic of fireflies
that light our path. Watch closely as the cricket's
song follows right behind the summer lanterns.
Together we stand amidst the current that touches
each leaf, one to another, cascading across the
forest until it becomes the wind.
I listen with you to that single reed that scrapes
its neighbor, etching out the sound of discord or
harmony, depending on our ability to hear.
I feel your presence breath to breath
Explore the wisdom of the wind and reed.
Notice the ground beneath your feet as fireflies
yield to cricket songs.
Take love in full measure, for the winter season
approaches too quickly.
In this shared moment beloved, I offer you my hand.
Offering our hand to the other for the
taking is a symbol of being gently present and conscious
in relationship.
The black and white photo of the child, holding
the hand of his grandfather inspired this writing.
Bob and Ernie Photography of Gilford NH created
this piece of art. To Ernie, my friend, thank you
